Ferocactus stainesii (Hook) Br & R.This particular fine specimen of Ferocactus stainesii was found growing close to the roadside near Aramberri in Mexico. It was around 8 foot tall and the clump was over 10 foot in diameter. With its attractive red spines this species is deservedly popular. In cultivation in the UK the plants are quite slow and these habitat plants must be a great age. They need to be moderately large before they flower and our largest seedling plant which is about 7 inches in diameter has yet to oblige.A variety with additional wispy spines is known as Ferocactus pilosus.
